Backup & Recovery | Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about managing your backup file, 24-word seed phrase, and recovery materials
Why is the 24-word recovery backup required?
The 24 words are required to encrypt and recover your secret shares (used to sign transactions). If you lose your device and cannot sign, you’ll need to retrieve your encrypted shares backup file and use the 24 words to decrypt it. Without this backup, you could lose access to your assets.
Why is it important to regularly update the backup file?
Each time you make changes to your vault, the backup file must be updated. Using an outdated file may lead to an unsuccessful recovery — including missing wallets, incorrect permissions, or inability to restore access to your assets.
Download a new backup file every time your signer participates in a vault creation, reshare, or signing configuration change. A monthly update is also recommended even if no vault events have occurred.
How often should I update my backup file?
Immediately after any of the following:
-
Creating a new vault
-
A vault reshare
-
Adding or removing a signer
-
Any modification to your vault's signing configuration
If no changes occur, a monthly update is still recommended to ensure data integrity.
What if I did not save the latest backup file?
If you did not save the latest backup file, you may be unable to restore access to vaults created or updated since your last export. It is essential to maintain an up-to-date backup file at all times. If your signer is still active and accessible, export a new backup file immediately from Settings in the app.
What happens if I use an outdated backup file?
An outdated backup file may not reflect the latest vault configuration, potentially leading to an incomplete or failed recovery. This can result in missing wallets, incorrect permissions, or the inability to restore access to your assets.
Where should I save my backup file?
Store your backup file in two locations:
- Offline / external drive (primary): downloaded manually and stored on a secure external drive, independent of any cloud account or device
- Cloud sync (secondary): the app automatically syncs your encrypted secret share to iCloud or Google Drive — useful for quick signer restore, but not a substitute for the exported file
Never store the backup file only on your device. See the Backup & Recovery Setup article for full storage guidance.
How can I ensure my backup file is always up to date?
- Export the file immediately after every vault creation, reshare, or configuration change
- Set a monthly reminder to export even if no vault events have occurred
- Verify the green checkmark in the app confirms cloud sync is active before exporting
- Store the exported file on a secure external drive as your primary copy
What should I do if my backup file does not work?
- Ensure you are using the most recently exported version of the file
- Verify that all recent vault changes occurred before the file was last exported
- Check that all signers' backup files are included in the zip if running the recovery tool
- Contact support if the issue persists
